Scouting the Competition

I recently ran across some excellent advice on how you can continue to refresh and rejuvenate your website and your search engine optimization campaign. I stumbled upon the tip at Bruce Clay’s Blog, written by Lisa Barone. But, Lisa actually got the idea from Donna at SEO Scoop in her post, What is Missing in Your SEO Campaign?

Donna writes:
“Look around your site. Now look around your competitors’ sites. What’s missing? I’d bet something is missing. What topic hasn’t been explored, explained, or expounded upon? Which user question has never been answered? What diagram has never been drawn? What podcast has never been heard? What screencast has never been shared?

Users are looking for something in your niche that they can’t find. I guarantee it. Figure out what it is and give it to them. Optimize the page for the appropriate search terms, share and socialize it, and OWN that search.

Be an SEO detective. Find what’s missing and be the first to display it. That’s linkbait at its finest.”

When we do SEO work for our clients, we constantly do ongoing detective work.  I suggest once a month (or whatever your schedule can fit, something is better than nothing) surfing your competitors sites for a nugget you can use on your own site. When you are surfing, you should visit your known, local competitors and take a look at the sites you are competing for keywords with nationally.Don’t just stick to the search engine that is your personal favorite, search your keywords on Google, Yahoo!, MSN and Ask.com. I challenge you to choose one item each month that you would like to add to your site and do it.Get out there and start scouting the competition!
